Tender and Silly with the Adelsman's Family

Every in-home family session I have the privilege to document feels like more than a photo session. Each one makes me feel like I’m being let in on a secret to people’s inner family lives and emotions. I don’t take any of these moments for granted. Each one is a gift.

Anjali and Jamie, parents to an effervescent four-year-old Sami and newly one-year-old Remi, had an aura of geniality throughout our entire encounter. Their eagerness to actively participate in the session and their palpable enthusiasm were greatly appreciated. If one parent isn’t totally sold on a shoot, it can make the whole thing that much more difficult.

We opted to conduct the photoshoot within the comfort of their home, a space they currently shared with Anjali's mother. The concept of multigenerational living, which they embraced, lent a unique charm to their household dynamics.

During our conversations, Anjali divulged that their family has a passion for exploration through travel, maintaining an active lifestyle, nurturing their verdant garden, and indulging in playful moments. It was palpable that Sami and Rem thrived within an environment that fostered curiosity and revelry. Throughout the session, their playful spirits propelled us into motion, engaging in various activities that kept them consistently tumbling around. The adults, including myself, willingly surrendered to their lead, immersing ourselves in their contagious youth.

What captivated my attention most was the seamless transition between playful whimsy and profound connections within this family unit. As a conscientious photographer, it’s important to capture the multifaceted aspects of individuals' lives. I steadfastly believe in encapsulating not only the laughter and unbridled joy, but also the tranquil and introspective instances.

For Anjali, this photoshoot held personal significance. She expressed a fervent desire to immortalize this fleeting phase of their lives, as the ceaseless passage of time seemed to hasten with the arrival of Remi. The amalgamation of exhilaration and tenderness struck a chord with me, serving as a reminder of the ephemeral nature and quiet beauty that parenthood encompasses.

Further augmenting the charm of this family dynamic were the inspiring photographs on the walls, captured by Jamie himself. Their home was graced with evocative snapshots from their travels. It felt special to witness.

My goal with every session is to be able to see people for who they are, and focus on capturing more than one side of your personalities. I want to get the children playing and having fun, but I also want to capture the quiet tender moments in between. Those are the moments I see get most often missed in other sessions, and for me, they’re some of the most telling about this moment in time.
